Happy Monday!
Today we learned about winter holidays! Students traveled from classroom to classroom learning about Christmas around the world, Hanukkah, and New Years. This week we are working on Phonics: /a/ - our story this week is The Pet Rat Reading: we will be reading Reindeer themed books, fiction and non-fiction. From now on, we will have 4 sight words each week. This week's words are her, zero, has, girl. Writing: teaching books, we are really focusing on correct spacing and using capital and lower case letters correctly Math: Measurement, students must know the terms – shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, taller, shorter Social Studies: Holidays around the world Thursday, we will celebrate Grinch Day! All our activities will have to do with the Grinch. Please feel free to dress as a Who, the Grinch or in any other festive gear.

This week We are working on Phonics – short I - /i/ - please practice reading the phonics story each night and return on Friday. We will learn a new story each Monday. Reading- we are working on main idea and details. We have been reading books about the sun and moon. Writing- teaching books- we are trying to focus on spacing between words and appropriate capitalization Math- teen numbers and graphing (bar graphs) Science- day and night I hope you all enjoyed your week off! The fieldtrip planned for tomorrow has been postponed due to weather. We will keep you updated when we reschedule.
This week we are working on phonics-/ee/ Students brought home a book of phonics stories today. We will practice one phonics story a week. these stories are written only with the sounds we have taught. Please have students practice reading the story each night and record their time/errors/date and have them illustrate a story. These stories help with decoding, fluency and tracking. reading- we will be reading books about the first Thanksgiving Writing- teaching books math-teen numbers social studies- Thanksgiving Remember our Thanksgiving lunch is on Thursday at 10:30. You will want to arrive early to find a parking space and purchase a lunch ticket. After the lunch, we will invite you to come back to the classroom for some cute songs. I will have a sign out in the classroom if you would like to take your child home with you. Please let me know if you are unable to make Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday. We would like to make sure we sit with the students who do not have parents in attendance. SNACK note- please remember to send a healthy snack every day. We are seeing quite a bit of Halloween candy for snack. Happy Monday!
Remember- No school tomorrow. Don't forget to vote! Thank you to Sharmistha, Anshuk's mom, who taught us about Diwali today. You will find a goodie bag in your childs backpack. Inside the goodie bag is a clay Diya, or lamp. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance and the Diya (or the earthen lamp) represents that eternal light of knowledge and goodness. Diwali is celebrated tomorrow, November 7. Friday is our Veterans day assembly. We invite all Veterans to join us starting at 8am in the cafeteria. There will be a luncheon afterwards. We would like for all Kindergarteners to wear red on Friday. This week we are working on phonics: /l/ /r/ Reading: rhyming words and plurals Writing: True Stories Math: teen numbers, writing numbers to 20 SS: Veterans day Popcorn words: We are a week ahead of the rest of Kindergarten. We are using this week to let them catch up. There were no new words this week, they were a repeat of the week before. Art Barn- We will go to the Art barn on Tuesday, November 13. This field trip is 100% outdoors. PLEASE send appropriate clothing for the weather. We will eat lunch there. Please send any packed lunch in disposable bags. Water or drinks should be in disposable containers as well. Students are also given the opportunity to purchase a school lunch to bring to the Art Barn that day. Thanksgiving Feast- our Thanksgiving Feast is November 15 from 10:30-11:15. We would like to invite you back to the classroom after the feast to hear us sing some very cute turkey songs! This week we are working on Phonics: /h/ /w/ /wh/ Reading: retelling main idea and details as well as making words plural Writing: teaching books- creating sentences and adding details (this week we are writing about the bald eagle to integrate social studies) Math: comparing numbers and objects Science: motion SS: the Bald Eagle Rocky Mount is participating in the Lassiter canned food drive. We would love for you to send in some canned or non-perishable goods to donate. I sent home a scholastic catalog last week with Thanksgiving and Christmas themed books. The due date on those orders will be November 9. Our class code is NB698 Remember students are allowed to wear their school appropriate Halloween costumes on Wednesday Happy Wednesday!
This week we are working on Phonics: /m/ /n/ /ng/ Literacy: retelling stories, rhyming, reading punctuation marks Writing: we are beginning to write “teaching books” Math: comparing objects Science: motion The kids received 8 “brownie points” for compliments on hallway behavior. They have chosen to have pajama day on Friday! RAZ-Kids is a wonderful site we have access to that has leveled books for your child! The site reads a book to the child, the student can then read the book and even record themselves reading, then take a short quiz on the book. This is a WONDERFUL resource and I would LOVE for you to take advantage of it at home. The site is https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login teacher is : aaumann. Students then select their name and their password is the picture of the sailboat. Students can work independently, OR you can sit with them and have them read the books to you! IXL is another resource we have for you to use at home. Please take advantage of this math practice! Login information is taped inside their red folders. Your November family project letter will come home tomorrow. I will put an example of the finished project on Class Dojo tomorrow for you to see. Tomorrow is Walk to school day. Halloween is almost here! Students will be allowed the option to wear costumes for Halloween on Wednesday, Oct. 31st. Because it is a school day and students will be expected to continue their learning and studies, we ask that all students follow the guidelines below when choosing a costume. * No masks * No make-up * No blood * No weapons * No scary items or attire * Costumes must allow for movement and participation in all school activities including P.E., recess, and class activities * Students must be able to take care of their personal needs (restroom, eating lunch, etc.) independently while in their costume * Costumes must reflect characters that are appropriate for an elementary school Happy Monday!
This week we are working on Phonics: reviewing all sounds Reading: retelling stories, and we will be doing literacy centers Writing: We will be writing during literacy centers this week due to early dismissal Math: more, less, equal and counting strategies Book fair: we will visit the book fair tomorrow morning (Tuesday). While we are in the book fair, we will help students write down the books they want and prices. You can then send a check in for the exact amount to purchase the books you wish to buy. You are also welcome to come and shop in the media center this week! Remember there are no ASP clubs this week due to early dismissal. IXL- we taught the kids to use IXL last week. The school purchased this program to help practice math standards. I will put a “login information” card in each of their red folders this week. This week we are working on Phonics: /th/ sound- this has a quiet sound as in “with” and a loud sound as in “that” Reading: recognizing different types of texts (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) and retelling stories Writing: we are wrapping up writing “true stories.” Our fifth grade buddies are coming tomorrow to read the work we have completed this quarter. I will be giving you all the true stories at conference next week. Math: reviewing 2d and 3d shapes Social Studies: Columbus Day Don’t forget Thursday is an early release day! (lunch 9:30-10:00, specials 10:55-11:30) Conference week is next week. We are on an early release schedule all week next week. Brusters night has been canceled for tomorrow due to weather and so have ASP clubs for Thursday. The book fair is also next week! This is separate from our Scholastic book orders. Scholastic orders are due the 19th. This is a great way to purchase books at a great price and help us get new books for our classroom library. Good Evening!
I hope everyone had a wonderful fall break. We enjoyed our time in Seagrove. Even the baby seemed to love the beach. This week we will be working on: Phonics: /sh/ Reading: Students should recognize different types of text: Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry Writing: True stories! Today we wrote about our fall break. Some of the kids are so excited to begin to write sentences on their work. We will be sharing some of their writing with you at conferences. Math: 3d or solid shapes (I have been assessing counting. This quarter students should be able to count to 50. Most of them can count well beyond 50. However, if you know your child cannot count to 50 please work with them at home because they will need to count to 120 by the end of the year!) Social studies: rules and citizenship/rights and responsibilities Thursday we will have an assembly. We will be watching the 2nd graders perform their short musical. |
